Heidfeld began racng at age 11, and at 17 moved into Formula Ford 1600. He won eight of the nine races in his first year of competition.
Moving into Formula 3 in 1996 Heidfeld won the title in his second season. He became the McLaren test driver in 1996, and in 2001 signed a three-year deal with Sauber.
